SoC Launches
Specialisation in Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME)
|
|
From Academic Year 2008/9, students in NUS School of Computing
(SoC) majoring in Information Systems may opt for the new
Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME)
specialisation. SSME is a new multidisciplinary research area
and academic discipline, integrating aspects of information
systems, computer science, operations research, engineering,
management sciences, business strategy, social and cognitive
sciences, and legal sciences.

Spearheaded by IBM, the aim of the new discipline is to develop
infocomm professionals who are technically competent and who
possess a broad knowledge of domain areas as well as a strong
service orientation.
Graduates from the SSME specialisation may look forward to good
employment opportunities that transcend geographical borders:
IBM estimates hiring over 50,000 university graduates worldwide,
skilled in the field of SSME.
The SSME specialisation offered by NUS School of Computing is
possible with the collaboration between IBM and the School, with
the support of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore.
On 28 November 2007, IBM signed a Memorandum of Understanding
with the three universities in Singapore to introduce SSME into
their undergraduate curricula.
In support of the initiative, IDA together has garnered the
partnership of industry players to offer 38 National Infocomm
Scholarships (NIS) to students enrolled in SSME-related degree
programmes. SoC students (new and existing) enrolling in the
SSME specialisation will be eligible to apply for
NIS Scholarship.
Students in the School who opt to specialise in SSME must
complete 24 modular credits (MCs) for the specialisation chosen
from a list of modules which include CS3361 Service Science (4
MCs) and CS4361 Service Systems (4 MCs). Both modules are
essential for the SSME specialisation.
