GRADUATE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME (GIP)


INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS


Objectives
To provide our graduate students with a high quality graduate education, real world experience, and a direction towards a successful career.    


Target Group

Master of Computing Students (Full Time).
Student placement would begin at the end of Semester 2 of each academic year from May to July.


Eligibility

  • Must be full-time students under the Master of Computing program.
  • CAP must be at least 3.5 for Masters Students.
  • All nationalities are welcome to apply

Benefits

Student's placement would begin at the end of Semester 2 of each academic year (i.e. from May to July).  In addition to having the opportunity to gain valuable professional work experience and a high quality, marketable graduate education, the benefits also include:  
  • Monthly Stipend: $800-1000 per month (to be determined by individual organization)
  • Weekly Work Schedule:   40 hours per week
  • Mentoring: students will have the opportunity to benefit from the mentoring relationship established with the placement supervisor -- a seasoned professional.
  • Intern Support:   the Graduate Office will work closely with student throughout their intern experience.
  • Placement: Opportunity for a long term (up to 12-months) placement, after the 3-month internship.
  • Recognition : A certificate will be issued to students upon successful completion of the program.


Condition

  • Successful candidates are required to be attached to the organization from May to July.
  • During the internship, the student will work on a small project that could be specified by the company.
  • Students are expected to maintain good progress toward their degree while on the internship.
  • At the end of the internship, the student will be required to submit to the organization and SoC a report for the work done on the project.
  • The report (20-page) should include the following:

a) Report Cover
b) Project title
c) Table of contents
d) Synopsis
e) Introduction of the organization and work activities
f ) Schedule of work
g) Experiences learned
h) Benefits of this project
i ) Conclusion


Application and Selection

  • Email will be sent to the students to invite them to submit their application and resume.
  • The application deadline is will be end of February.
  • Applications will be processed based on agreed criteria jointly decided by the School of Computing and the organization.
  • Candidates are selected through a competitive process based upon applicants' qualifications and fit with departmental or organizational needs.
  • Candidates will be interviewed in March by SoC and the participating organization.
  • Outcome will be announced to successful candidates by end March.

 

Supervisors
Your project will directly be supervised by your organization's supervisor. There will be no academic supervisor from the School attached to you.


Leave
Students may be granted leave at the host organisation's discretion. For non-official matters that are beyond the scope of project work with the organisation, the organisation has the right to deduct their pay; however, this policy may vary from organisation to organisation. Students are advised to abide closely by the Human Resource practices of the organisation.


Medical Leave
Students are to inform their supervisor at the organisation if they are sick or need to consult a doctor. They are not to take leave of absence without their supervisor's prior knowledge. Students on medical leave will need to submit a medical certificate to their supervisor.


Vacation Leave
Paid vacation leave for students can only be granted at the discretion of the organisation


School Matters
Students should request permission from the host organisation to attend to school matters such as registration of modules, etc.


Visa
Students on overseas attachment may need to apply for a visa from the host country. For that purpose, students should request an offer letter from the organisation, which should be submitted to the local embassy/high commission/consulate with the necessary application forms and other support documents.
